Local honey questions

What counts as local honey?

Honey from hives near you, sold by the beekeeper who kept them. The sellers on this page keep bees in Naperville and nearby towns in the western suburbs.

Why does local honey look different from jar to jar?

Bees make honey from whatever is blooming, so color and flavor follow the season. Early summer honey from clover and basswood tends to be light and mild. Fall honey from goldenrod and aster tends to be darker, with a stronger taste.

My honey turned solid. Did it go bad?

No. Raw honey crystallizes over time, especially in a cool pantry, and that's normal. To make it runny again, set the jar in a pan of warm water and stir now and then. Skip the microwave, which can scorch it.

Can babies have honey?

No. Don't give honey of any kind to babies under 12 months old. It can cause infant botulism.

Can I buy local honey in bulk?

Yes. Some local beekeepers sell by the gallon or the 5-gallon pail. Send a request and we'll find one with enough on hand.
